Brass Founders, Sheffield

The aims of the proposal were to incorporate the former use of the site, the Brass Foundry, into the concept of the design proposal. As it is important to relate the site to its industrial history and context.

This is reflected in the materiality, form, rhythm and roof profile of the scheme. Furthermore, it was important to design a scheme that can be constructed in phases (3 phases) to enable students to move into the accommodation when phase 1 is constructed.

The site is fronted by Scotland St. and sits within the former industrial Civic Quarter of St Vincents within the city centre of Sheffield. The St Vincents region of the city is becoming a centre for creativity, artistic impression and a hive for student and young professional activity.

The redevelopment of the Brass Founders plot into student accommodation helps contribute towards the urban block improving upon the current usage and bringing positive enterprise to the area.
