Glass Works, Vauxhall Road, Liverpool

Glass Works is a new build student accommodation block located on the Eastern side of Vauxhall Road approximately 100m north of its intersection with Tithebarn Street, Great Cross Street and Hatton Gardens on a key gateway into Liverpool City Centre.

Through discussions with the Planning Authority, the concept for the proposed modelling and architectural appearance of the building has developed to respond to the sites historic use to symbolise and express amorphous molecular glass structures. As the proposed buildings functional requirements and site constraints generate a repetitive monolithic building form, we have developed a strong visual concept which breaks this overall mass into smaller masses. These respond both in plan, elevation and three dimensionally to both their immediate context and key distant City wide views and immediate human scale viewpoints.

The scheme consists of 323 en-suite rooms designed around an open courtyard and in addition to this the proposal will also offer a student common room containing laundry and games area fronting onto Vauxhall Road providing much needed active frontage and amenities to the surrounding private residential and student community.
