Pudsey Street, Liverpool

DAY have been engaged and challenged to transform the former ODEON cinema site, located to the rear of the Empire Theatre and Lime Street station fronting London Road into a new student village.

The proposals provide a fresh, contemporary piece of architecture adding a bold statement to Liverpool City Centre and rejuvenating a very prominent site in the city. High quality architecture was a key factor in the Clients brief when DAY were first engaged to develop concept ideas for the site. One of the key design principals was to provide active frontages to all sides of the scheme to promote passive surveillance in this heavily used area of the city.

Maximising the development potential of the plot with the approved 440 number of bedroom units was essential in financially ensuring the scheme worked from a budget point of view. At first glance the 0.59 acres site appears a very sizable plot centrally located in the City Centre and a rare chance to develop a scheme on such a scale. The scheme includes 440 bedrooms, landscaped amenity courtyard garden and multi use social spaces.

On-going discussions and design workshops with Liverpool City Council planning officer Chris Ridland and Urban Design Manager Rob Burns have been key to the scheme and have helped refine and drive the scheme in developing a high quality piece of architecture which underlines the Client's original vision for a July 2015 completion date.
